Marbella council is keen to have a legal Urban Plan for the town as soon as possible. The mayor, Ángeles Muñoz, said last week that she hopes the draft Plan will be presented to the council for initial approval by the end of this month.

After the Urban Plan has received initial approval from the local authority it will be put on public display, so people can suggest improvements or changes. Any necessary changes will be made after that and the document will be re-presented for approval by the council. After that it will be sent on to the Junta de Andalucía for definitive approval.

One major part of the Plan is the future construction of more than 1,000 social properties each year, to make up for the years during which 15,000 properties were built for private sale but hardly any low-priced social housing was constructed. The predicted population figures for Marbella during the term of the new Urban Plan are 132,905 in 2008, 150,449 in 2012 and 173,000 in 2016.
